I was praying at the piano this morning, asking God to bring the changes necessary in all our lives. Specifically in our marriages. The phrase ‘change the water here’ dropped into my mind as I sang and I immediately remembered the verses in 2 Kings 2. It is the story of the ‘Healing of the Water.’
It reminds me of so many of our troubled marriages. In the beginning when many of us got married our marriages were ‘well situated’ just like this town the people are talking about. But, as time passed on something bad happened. Something bad happened to ‘our water’ and our marriages like the land became unproductive.
2 Kings 2:19-22
The people of the city said to Elisha, “Look, our lord, this town is well situated, as you can see, but the water is bad and the land is unproductive.”
“Bring me a new bowl,” he said, “and put salt in it.” So they brought it to him. Then he went out to the spring and threw the salt into it, saying, “This is what the LORD says: ‘I have healed this water. Never again will it cause death or make the land unproductive.’” And the water has remained pure to this day, according to the word Elisha had spoken.
My Prayer
This is my prayer for you today. That God will say this of you. That your marriage is healed and that it no longer represents death or is unproductive. I can tell you Darin and I can say exactly that. What an absolute miracle this is. I know without any hesitation God can do this for you. Will it require loving when you don’t feel like it? Ofcourse! Will it require trusting when you can’t see any reason to trust? Yes! Will it require change? Definitely yes!
Proverbs 3:5,6
Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.
Lookin’ Good
I remember when Darin and I first arrived in Michigan and we started going to Metro South Church. I was thinking about one of the first times I was at our Mom’s group. I had expensive jeans on with some pretty cool boots and an argyle sweater from ‘the Gap’. I looked ‘well situated’. Darin had a very good job, we had a beautiful spunky daughter and a cool dog yet the water flowing in our marriage was very bad and we had become unproductive and death was lurking near by. We desperately needed a change in our water. Jesus came and healed our water. I pray He changes and heals yours too.
The Most Wonderful Thing
I think the thing that is the most wonderful about this example in 2 Kings is that, it doesn’t really matter how well your situated, how everything looks now or even how it looked when you first got married. It’s all about the water! And Jesus can come and heal your water!
